Wonderware Tech Alert 98 "Secure NetDDE use with InTouch version 8.0" is available

Wednesday, October, 2007 — Wonderware Products > InTouch

Wonderware Tech Alert 98 "Secure NetDDE use with InTouch version 8.0" is available. This Tech Alert applies to InTouch ver. 8.0 (it does not apply to InTouch 9.x and InTouch 10).

Installing InTouch 8.0 on a Windows 2000 machine creates a NetDDE shared folder for Wonderware legacy I/O Servers utilizing Winsock protocol. Creating the default NetDDE share does not mean that NetDDE will necessarily operate, only that the share is created. The presence of the share can cause some confusion or concern as related to NetDDE security. The share name appears in a security scan of the computer, even if the share is not usable.

NetDDE is disabled by default in Windows 2003 Server and is not used in InTouch versions after 8.0. This issue does not apply to Wonderware DA Servers or to any ArchestrA, Application Server (IAS) platform, or the Wonderware software that runs on the Application Server Platform.
